Design Philosophy (excerpted from Baidu Baike)

The Nanning Bridge features a single‑tower design, employing a curved beam–asymmetric outward‑inclined arch configuration. Both rib arches are inclined outward at varying angles, perfectly aligning with the geometric requirements of the curved beam. The transverse bracing between the two arch ribs has been eliminated; instead, the arch ribs rely on their inherent stiffness and the tension provided by the inclined hangers to achieve structural equilibrium. From an aesthetic perspective, the hangers resemble two upright harps gracefully joined together. The axes of the two arch ribs are composed of a combination of catenary curves, circular arcs, and straight lines, forming a harmonious arch axis. From afar, the bridge’s central spine appears like an elegant rainbow with smooth, sweeping curves, shimmering brilliantly in the sunlight. When viewed from above, the bridge takes on the appearance of a butterfly spreading its wings; meanwhile, the hangers connecting the arch crown to the bridge deck seem like cascading waterfalls flowing down from the rainbow—a truly breathtaking sight.
