Simply print it in one go—no need to worry about scaling. The blueprint model is a white-matte surface that you can color however you like; this is how I colored it.
The courtyard house is the quintessential embodiment of traditional northern Chinese residential architecture and a symbolic icon of Beijing’s urban culture, encapsulating centuries of residential wisdom and ritualistic traditions:
– Spatial layout: Adhering to the traditional hierarchical order of “the main house at the north end is most尊, the side wings are secondary, and the rear building serves as the guest quarters,” the design centers on a central axis to form a closed, “口”-shaped courtyard. The main hall, facing south and oriented toward the north, serves as the elders’ living space; the east and west side wings are for younger family members; and the rear building functions as a guest room or storage area. This enclosed structure not only ensures privacy but also creates an open, airy feeling of “sky within the courtyard,” perfectly reflecting the Chinese ideal of harmony between humanity and nature.
– Architectural details: The model accurately reproduces the core elements of the courtyard house: gray-tiled hard-gable roofs, bluestone foundations, vermilion courtyard walls, and wooden doors and windows. It also captures intricate details such as the auspicious “ruyi” gate at the entrance, the steps within the courtyard, and the mythical roof ornaments at the eaves. Every single feature faithfully replicates the construction techniques of Beijing residences during the Ming and Qing dynasties—for example, the texture of the roof tiles, the design of the door rings, and the tapering of the courtyard walls—all of which vividly convey the tactile quality of traditional architecture.
– Cultural significance: The courtyard house is more than just a living space—it is a vessel for family ethics and community culture, serving as the material manifestation of China’s traditional “family culture.” Today, it also stands as an important symbol of Beijing’s intangible cultural heritage and urban memory.
