During a visit to the Anhui Museum in China, I had the privilege of seeing the Cloud‑Pattern Five‑Pillar Vessel—and my curiosity was instantly piqued when I laid eyes on this bronze artifact, which bears a striking resemblance to a modern Wi‑Fi router.

This ancient relic dates back to the late Western Zhou through the Spring and Autumn periods (roughly 770–476 BCE).

The vessel stands 31 cm tall overall, with each pillar measuring 16.5 cm in height. It consists of a hollow square base supporting five identically sized, evenly spaced cylindrical columns, resulting in a truly distinctive form.

The square base and the flat ridge at the top are both adorned with the signature double‑hook cloud motif—a hallmark design found on bronze artifacts from the Wu-Yue region of China (the area along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River).

The purpose of this vessel remains a tantalizing mystery within academic circles, though several theories have been proposed:

Instrument Theory: Some scholars suggest it may have served as a type of percussion instrument—though it’s unclear how it could actually be played, and there’s little concrete evidence to support this claim.

Knot‑Tying Device Theory: Others theorize that the vessel was used as a “knot‑tying” tool: the five pillars represent the five fingers, each capable of holding a different knot to record significant events within the community.

Sacred Ritual Instrument Theory: As writing systems emerged, knot‑tying gradually evolved into a formalized ritual practice performed in temple settings.

This is a 1/6 scale mini replica—perfect as both a decorative display piece and a refrigerator magnet. With slicing software, you can easily add cylindrical recesses to the back to serve as magnetic mounting holes (a 10 mm diameter hole has already been pre‑configured).
