I. History and Uses
Its origins are tied to the popularity of rouge; as early as the Han Dynasty, dedicated jade and glazed-ceramic boxes were in use. During the Tang and Song dynasties, porcelain reached its zenith, while the Ming and Qing periods saw the pinnacle of enamel, gilding, and lacquerware techniques.
Primary function: to hold rouge paste or powder, lip rouge, and scented powders, with airtight sealing to prevent moisture; it was commonly included in makeup chests and also served as a wedding gift and a decorative item in the boudoir.
