Stone lions are decorative sculptures carved from stone, commonly used in traditional Chinese culture as protective talismans against evil spirits. Below is a detailed overview of these iconic figures:
Origins and Evolution: Lions were not native to China; during the pre-Qin period, the Chinese referred to lions as “suanni.” After Buddhism was introduced to China, the lion came to be associated with Manjushri Bodhisattva as his mount, thereby enhancing its sacred status. Following Zhang Qian’s diplomatic missions to the Western Regions, various Western Regions states began presenting lions as tribute to the Chinese court. The earliest surviving stone lions in China can be found in the stone shrines of the Wu Family Tomb in Jiaxiang, Shandong, dating back to the reign of Emperor Huan of the Eastern Han Dynasty, as well as in front of the Gao Yi Tomb in Ya’an, Sichuan. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, stone lion art reached a mature stage; by the Song and Five Dynasties periods, stone lions had become increasingly secular in nature; and by the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, stone lion art had fully embraced secularization and folkloric expression.
