The Agate Jellyfish is entirely blue and sports a diamond-shaped “nose.” On either side of its head are two large, transparent structures that resemble red agate, with a slightly smaller one centered on its forehead. Two gray tentacles extend from the lower part of its body. Ninety-nine percent of its body is water, while the remaining one percent contains specialized organs that produce venom. Although it may look similar to the Field Jellyfish, the Agate Jellyfish is actually a completely different species.

Agate Jellyfish typically drift in shallow waters, and during low tide they can sometimes be found washed up on beaches, shriveled and dried out. Even after drying on the sand or other surfaces, they often remain viable for some time. Because most of their body is composed of water, they become desiccated when removed from the sea—but as soon as they come into contact with water, they revive. They use the moisture within their bodies to refract sunlight, converting it into beam-like energy that is then emitted from their crystal-clear eyes. With their two long tentacles, they can wrap around an opponent’s entire body and inject venom through their stinging needles. Although these venomous tentacles can break off, they will regrow over time. Their swimming ability is rather limited, so they blend seamlessly with the surrounding seawater, making them extremely difficult to spot. As they drift through the waves in search of prey, they extend their venomous tentacles toward anything they encounter, and there are frequent reports of anglers being stung after mistakenly hooking one. If you are stung or bitten by its venomous tentacles, seek medical attention immediately.
