The White House, also known as the Official Residence of the President of the United States, is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., United States. As both the official residence of the U.S. President and his family, the White House serves as a living museum that vividly showcases American history and stands as one of the nation’s most iconic symbols. Construction of the White House began on October 13, 1792. In 1800, just as the building was nearing completion, President John Adams moved in. With the exception of George Washington, the first President of the United States, the White House has served as the official residence for every subsequent U.S. President.
