The Aztec Sun Stone, also known as the Aztec Calendar Stone, is one of the most important monuments of the Aztec civilization, created in the late 15th century. It is a massive circular basalt sculpture about 3.6 meters in diameter and weighing over 24 tons, symbolizing the universe, time, and the cycles of the sun.

At the center is the face of the sun god Tonatiuh, with wide eyes and a blade-shaped tongue, representing sacrifice and the sun’s need for energy. Around him are four panels symbolizing the four previous worlds (or “suns”) that were destroyed before the current age, known as the Fifth Sun.

Surrounding these are the 20 day signs of the Aztec sacred calendar, used to mark time, rituals, and destiny. The outer ring features two fire serpents (Xiuhcoatl), representing the flow of time and cosmic power. The Sun Stone is not just a calendar, but a powerful visual map of creation, destruction, and rebirth.
