🌊 Cute Ichthyosaurus "Riptide" – CARTOON EDITION (single color print)

Meet Riptide, the friendliest "torpedo" of the Mesozoic seas! This adorable stylized model represents a "chibi" version of the famous marine reptile, the Ichthyosaurus. With his cheerful expression, big curious eyes, long snout, and detailed back, Riptide is the perfect desk companion, a great gift for prehistoric life enthusiasts, or a playful accessory for a child's room.

📜 Ichthyosaurus: Myths vs. Reality The name Ichthyosaurus translates to "fish lizard". Although people often colloquially call him a "water dinosaur", he was actually not a dinosaur at all – he was a marine reptile perfectly adapted to life in the water. Although our Riptide looks cute, his real-life ancestor was a fascinating creature:

  • Appearance and Size: His body shape was very similar to modern-day dolphins. A typical Ichthyosaurus measured about 2 to 3 meters in length.
  • Smooth Body vs. "Armor": Although our model has a distinct texture on its back resembling armor or rough scales, a real Ichthyosaurus had perfectly smooth skin. Much like modern cetaceans, he needed to minimize water resistance to swim as fast as possible. The prominent texture on the model is purely an artistic choice so that Riptide looks his absolute best when printed!
  • Lifestyle: They were extremely fast swimmers with large eyes (the largest in relation to body size of any vertebrate), which helped them see in the dark depths where they hunted fish and squid.
  • Viviparity: Unlike many other reptiles, they did not lay eggs on the shore but gave birth to live young directly in the water!
  • When and Where He Lived: He roamed the oceans during the Early Jurassic period (approximately 200 million years ago), and his fossils have been found primarily in Europe (e.g., in the UK and Germany).

🔍 Model Features

  • Iconic Snout and Flippers: Riptide features his signature elongated snout and strong flippers, which look incredibly stylish in this cartoon version.
  • Textured Back: The detailed "armored" texture on the dorsal plates and flippers gives the model a unique character and an attractive look that stands out fantastically once printed.
  • Stable Stance: Thanks to his wide bottom flippers, Riptide rests firmly on any surface and is ready to "swim" across your shelf.

🖨 Print Settings & Recommendations (Tested in Practice)

Due to the complexity of the body and overhangs (especially on the snout and flippers), this model requires a bit of attention during pre-print preparation (clean build plate, proper calibration). I have personally tested the model on 5 different printers, and everything went smoothly with these settings:

  • Supports: Required – I recommend Organic (Tree) supports.
  • Support Angle:
    • For Bambu Lab printers, an angle of 20° worked best for me.
    • For Anycubic, Elegoo printers, I recommend an angle of 25°.
  • Layer Height: 0.20 mm (0.16 mm recommended for finer detail).
  • Infill: 8% gyroid.
  • Surface Effect: Fuzzy skin (optional – distance 0.3 mm / thickness 0.3 mm) to achieve a specific "skin" effect.

WARNING: Be extremely careful when removing supports around the thin snout and flippers. Although these parts are designed to be printable, they can snap if handled roughly during post-processing.

📏 Size and Colors (noAMS)

  • Scaling: Standard length is approx. 10 cm. Scaling up works perfectly; however, scaling down significantly is not recommended – the eye assembly and the tip of the snout could become too fragile.
  • Multi-color Printing (noAMS): The model is designed for single-color printers (as you can see in the photos, it looks great in various colors!). The eyes are printed separately and then inserted into the head. This allows you to achieve a professional multi-color look without needing units like Bambu AMS or Anycubic ACE Pro.

🧩 Assembly Each eye consists of three parts that are simply inserted directly into Riptide’s head and secured with a drop of superglue. Assembly is highly intuitive and quick.

🗂 Print Plates

  • Plate 1 – Riptide body
  • Plates 2-4 – Individual eye colors (Black / White / Iris color of your choice)
  • Plate 5 – Complete pair of eyes using sequential printing (for AMS / ACE Pro users)

🗂 Available Files

  • 3MF files for BambuLab, Anycubic, and Elegoo (including recommended settings).
  • STL files for other printers and slicers.

Do you like Riptide? I would be very happy to see your Makes and read your reviews! Every print you share motivates me to design more prehistoric friends.
