Ammonites were an extinct group of cephalopod paleozoic organisms that resembled modern nautiluses in appearance, yet exhibited far greater diversity in terms of evolution, morphology, and ecology—earning them the moniker “timekeepers of the ocean.”
- Scientific Name: Ammonoidea
- Time Span: Approximately 400 million years ago (Devonian Period) to 66 million years ago (Late Cretaceous)
- Cause of Extinction: They vanished alongside the dinosaurs during the mass extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous Period.
- Habitat: Ancient marine environments
Spiral Shells
- The vast majority feature planar spiral shells, though a few species exhibit straight shells or irregular, convoluted forms.
- Shell structures are typically bilaterally symmetrical, lending a striking sense of geometric order to their appearance.
