  • Isolation Mount

This is a floating wall mount for dynamic mode loudspeakers (DML). If you are not familiar with DML audio devices, please reference the YouTube video from Tech Ingredient listed in the URL references below.

These mounts are used in pairs with a 76 mm length of 3 mm elastic cord. The mounts are capable of using up to 5 mm cord if needed. I am using 8 mm x .8 mm x 10 mm springs to provide the clamping pressure on the cord.

There are 2 different types of mounts provided. One uses 2 of the 3M Command Strips to mount on the wall. The other is a very simple #6 drywall screw mount. I applied the mounts to the back of the speaker panel using Starbond Black Medium-Thick Cyanoacrylate Super Glue.

Some of the advantages of these mounts:

  • You can adjust the elastic cord in the mount to perfectly level the speakers.
  • Using the 3 legged stool principle, you only need 3 sets of mounts per speaker. (I put 2 on the top and 1 on the bottom)
  • Minimal damage to wall (especially using the 3M strips)
  • Panels float 46 mm from the wall leaving plenty of room for the speaker exciter and wiring.
  • Excellent sound isolation between the wall and panel.

TIPS:

  • Set the panel mounts 89 mm back from the edge of the panel. I put them on the diagonal on the tops and in the middle on the bottom of the panels. (shown below)
  • The mount on the wall is 62.5 mm out from the panel mount. (shown in yellow below)
  • I use 6 mm length of heat shrink with adhesive at the ends of the elastic cord to prevent fraying. I shrink a 12 mm length of tube and then cut the tube and cord leaving 6 mm of tube on each end.
  • Use a bubble or laser level to get the mounts attached to the wall as level as possible.
  • Use a measuring tape to get the mounts on the panels as square as possible.
  • The rest can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the cord in the mounts.
  • The panels should be bouncy when attached properly. If they are too loose, use the bottom mount to tighten until bounciness is achieved.
