In chess, the “knight’s head” refers to the knight piece. It is the only piece in chess that moves in an “L” shape—two squares horizontally or vertically, followed by one square in the perpendicular direction—and it can leap over other pieces.

  • Starting Position: At the beginning of the game, White’s two knights are positioned on b1 and g1 on the back rank, while Black’s two knights occupy b8 and g8, nestled between the rooks and bishops, respectively.
  • Movement Rules: The knight moves by first advancing two squares in a horizontal or vertical direction, then shifting one square to the left or right, forming an “L” pattern. Unlike other pieces, the knight can jump over intervening pieces without being blocked.
  • Piece Capture: The knight captures pieces in the same way it moves—if an opponent’s piece sits on a square that the knight can reach via its “L”‑shaped path, it may capture that piece and occupy the square.
  • Piece Value: The knight is generally regarded as a “minor piece,” with a value comparable to that of the bishop. Its typical worth is around 3 points, lower than the rook (approximately 5 points) and the queen (about 9 points), but higher than the pawn (roughly 1 point).
