Inspired by the slow contortion of a body caught in motion, Ryu twists around a vertical axis as it rises, its rounded ridges climbing in one continuous spiral. Part of the Forma Vase Collection, the piece is designed as a pure sculptural object, with no decoration bolted on and no narrative beyond the gesture itself. The whole body prints in vase mode, so the rotation reads as one breath from base to rim.
Design & Concept
I designed Ryu around a single idea: a vase that looks like it is twisting on its own axis, as if the body had been caught mid-rotation and left there. The geometry rotates progressively from the base to the rim, and the rounded ridges feel like a skin stretching with the motion. Printed in vase mode, the entire object comes off the bed as one continuous spiral wall, with no internal seams to break the silhouette. The matte warm tone of the printed sample sits between sand and clay, soft to the eye and quietly grounded on any surface.
Key Features:
- Twisting Silhouette: The whole body rotates progressively from base to rim, reading like a form caught mid-motion.
- Sculptural Spiral: Rounded ridges wrap the vase in one continuous helix, soft enough to invite touch and graphic enough to hold the eye.
- Vase Mode Construction: Single-perimeter spiralized print, no internal seams, fast on the bed and clean on the surface.
- Matte Surface: The printed sample shows a soft matte finish that catches light along each ridge without any glare.
- Single-Part Print: Comes off the bed fully formed, no supports, no assembly, no post-processing required.
- Forma Collection Entry: Part of the Forma Vase Collection, a family of vases designed as pure sculptural objects sharing the same vase-mode language.
Printing Recommendations:
- Vase Mode (Spiralize Outer Contour): Enabled. Mandatory. The vase is engineered around vase mode and will not print correctly without it.
- Walls / Perimeters: 1. A single outer wall, as required by vase mode.
- Top Shell Layers: 0. The rim stays open, as a vase rim should.
- Bottom Shell Layers: 10. A thick floor gives the vase the rigidity it needs to hold the twisting form upright.
- Infill: 0%. In vase mode the body is hollow by design.
- Detect Thin Internal Solid Infill: Disabled. Keeps the toolpath as one continuous helix without injected infill patches.
- Slow Down for Overhangs: Disabled. Constant speed keeps the spiral seam consistent.
- Material: Matte PLA recommended to match the warm sand tone and soft finish shown in the photos.
- Supports: Not required.
