The early Western Zhou (11th–10th century BC) bronze ritual vessel known as the “Pangu Long‑headed Bronze Lei” is a national first‑grade cultural relic, unearthed from Tomb M111 at Yiejia Mountain in Suizhou City, Hubei Province. It stands as an outstanding exemplar of Shang–Zhou bronze ritual ware.
With its classic lei form—square lip, high, constricted neck, bulging body, and tall, circular foot—the piece boasts rich, full-bodied lines that exude both dynamism and tension.
- Function: As a large-scale wine vessel, this lei was used by high‑ranking nobles during the early Western Zhou period for crucial ceremonial occasions such as sacrificial rites and grand banquets, symbolizing power and status.
The most striking feature of the vessel’s lid is a fully sculpted coiled dragon. With wide‑eyed, piercing gaze and towering horns, the dragon crouches atop the lid on its forelegs, its body spiraling gracefully—a majestic pose that serves not only as a functional lid knob but also as the artistic centerpiece, delivering a powerful visual impact.
2. Animal‑Head Ring Ears: On either side of the shoulder sits a semi‑circular ear shaped like an animal head, adorned with a round ring suspended beneath—both enhancing portability and lending the vessel an air of solemn dignity.
3. Three‑Dimensional Animal Heads: At the center of the shoulder’s frontal surface and near the base of the lower body, two prominent, three‑dimensional ox or beast heads serve as decorative accents, echoing the flat, geometric patterns across the vessel’s body while adding layers of intricate depth.
4. Elaborate Decorative Motifs: The entire surface of the vessel is rendered with a dense, finely woven cloud‑and‑thunder motif as a background, embellished with iconic Shang–Zhou designs such as taotie motifs, kui‑dragon patterns, and phoenix‑bird designs. These motifs feature smooth, flowing lines and meticulously arranged compositions, imbued with an aura of mystery and gravitas.
This Pangu Long‑headed Bronze Lei is not merely a work of exquisite artistry—it is a timeless historical artifact, silently bearing witness to the civilization and splendor of 3,000 years past.
