Introduction:

Coffee grounds can be recycled for a variety of uses, including handmade exfoliating soap, deodorizing cat litter boxes, freshening refrigerators, eliminating cigarette odors, and composting. However, if moist coffee grounds are piled up without being promptly broken apart and dried, they may soon become home to vibrant fungal colonies. Since commercially available tools for efficiently processing coffee waste are scarce, we designed our own— a coffee-ground bin that integrates a tool for breaking up the grounds with a scoop. This allows users to easily fluff the grounds after each brewing session, then collect them in the bin or transfer them to another container for drying on the balcony, in an oven, air fryer, or fruit dryer, effectively saying goodbye to those unwelcome fungi.

About the design:

  • Modeled using Fusion 360;
  • The tool head features a threaded design for easy replacement;
  • The mesh-like circular scoop efficiently crushes compacted coffee grounds and turns over loose residue, effectively breaking up clumps while its open structure makes it easy to shake off any powder that sticks to the tool;
  • The opposite end of the scoop is shaped like a diagonally cut bamboo stick, serving as a handle that ensures the tool functions as a spoon while providing a comfortable grip, making it convenient to transfer coffee grounds into soup packets or use as a refrigerator deodorizer;
  • The print-friendly design optimizes both functionality and aesthetics.

Printing and usage instructions:

  • Standard settings: 2 walls, 15% infill; testing has shown this provides sufficient strength. Using PETG for printing can yield even greater strength and durability;
  • You can also print just the scoop attachment and use it with your existing coffee-ground bin. If the dimensions don’t match, adjust the scale percentage in your slicing software (remember to scale the accessory head along with the main body);
  • PLA is not heat-resistant and tends to deform when exposed to high temperatures, so avoid stirring hot coffee grounds or powders immediately after brewing;
  • You can customize and optimize the design to reduce noise and improve slip resistance—for example, by adding thick EVA foam tape or other cushioning materials to the handle or the bin’s rim, or by attaching non-slip silicone pads or 3M nano-adhesive to the bottom of the bin.
