Long-burning stone lanternswere originally developed in China before spreading to Korea and Japan. In the early days, both Korea and Japan closely emulated Chinese practices, typically placing a single stone lantern in front of temple halls.Japan’s temples and shrines have long upheld the tradition of devotees making offerings and donations; as a result, structures liketorii gatesand stone lanterns began to proliferate, eventually evolving into a distinctive landscape feature—and giving rise to numerous unique styles over time.
After the Late Tang and Five Dynasties periods, Chinese stone lanterns gradually declined in popularity, eventually being largely replaced by incense burners.
