Macaws are a collective term for birds belonging to six genera within the parrot family (Psittacidae) of the order Psittaciformes, renowned for their dazzling plumage, keen intelligence, and powerful beaks.
Classification: Macaws are categorized into six genera—Ara, Orthopsittaca, Primolius, Cyanopsitta, Diopsittaca, and Propyrrhura—comprising a total of 17 species.
Morphological Characteristics: Macaws range in size from large to medium, classified as robust climbing birds with toes arranged in pairs facing opposite directions. Their beaks are exceptionally strong and powerful, curved like a sickle, serving as a “third foot” that aids in climbing. Their plumage boasts an extraordinary array of vibrant colors, including red, blue, yellow, and green. Species vary considerably in size; for example, the largest, the Hyacinth Macaw, can reach nearly 95 centimeters in length, while the Chestnut‑headed Macaw measures only about 40 centimeters.
