The Northern Qi white marble statue of Shakyamuni Buddha was commissioned in the seventh year of Tianbao during the Northern Qi Dynasty (556 AD) by Zhaojun Wang Gao Rui in memory of his late uncle, Emperor Xianwu Gao Huan, and his elder brother, Emperor Wenxiang Gao Cheng. Today, it is housed at theHebei Provincial Museum. The statue was carved from a single block of white marble; the Buddha’s head was stolen in 1996 but was later authenticated in 2014 as the head that had been held by Master Xingyun of Fo Guang Shan Temple in Taiwan.Master Xingyun. On May 23, 2015, a donation ceremony was held at Fo Guang Shan Temple in Taiwan to reunite the Buddha’s body and head, after which the complete statue was exhibited at the National Museum of China in Beijing and the Hebei Provincial Museum.
