  • Gilded Bronze Pulao Knob

  • Museum

This bronze bell is meticulously cast from pure copper, featuring an elegant, rounded drum shape with a hollow interior. The body is slightly wider at the waist, while the lower rim is perfectly flat. The top is adorned with a Pulaolao knob—two figures intertwined in a graceful, dynamic embrace that exudes both liveliness and imposing presence. A raised arch on the back creates a decorative aperture for suspension. This Pulaolao knob design is frequently found on various bronze bells housed at the Dazhong Temple in Beijing, serving as a standard motif in Qing Dynasty court craftsmanship. The bell’s contours are dignified and grand, with a smooth, unadorned surface that displays a deep chestnut-brown hue, reminiscent of aged patina—a testament to its refined, antique aesthetic. The copper is exceptionally pure, revealing a subtle, snowflake-like sheen that radiates outward from the core, lending the piece a weighty, substantial feel in the hand and a clear, resonant tone when struck.
