The lynx bears a striking resemblance to a cat, yet it is far larger—making it the largest extant felid in much of Europe and western Siberia (the Outer Khingan Rangethe Sayan Mountains to the north). Within the Felinae subfamily, it ranks third in size, trailing only the cougar and the cheetah among medium-sized predators. Adult lynxes typically weigh between 15 and 30 kilograms, with body lengths ranging from 80 to 130 centimeters and tails measuring 16 to 23 centimeters. Their bodies are stocky, with relatively long limbs; their tails are extremely short and thick, ending in a blunt, rounded tip. The base of their ears is broad, while the ear tips sport distinctive, upright tufts of black fur. Long, drooping hairs adorn both cheeks, and the belly is also densely coated in long fur. The dorsal side of the body is darker, with a reddish-brown hue that deepens toward the midline; the underside is lighter, tinged with yellowish-white. The area around the eyes is edged with pale, almost white fur, while the cheeks feature 2–3 prominent, dark brown longitudinal stripes.
