The Nine Sons of the Dragon

4
1
The “Water‑Subduing Divine Beast” – a type of dragon tasked with taming the unruly “water monsters” lurking beneath bridges. Another variant is the Chi, one of the nine sons of the legendary dragon, known for its wide mouth and vast belly capable of holding copious amounts of water. In architectural design, it is often used as decorative embellishments above drainage outlets, referred to as Chi‑headed water spouts. On bridges, these motifs are typically carved into the capitals of balustrade posts or the voussoirs of arches—making them particularly common on stone bridges.
