The urban sculpture “Entrepreneurship” in Pingdingshan was designed in October 1984 and completed in October 1990. Rising proudly along Jianshe Road in downtown Pingdingshan, it soars skyward like a pillar supporting the heavens, its graceful form seeming to brush against the clouds as it warmly welcomes distant visitors. The artist behind this masterpiece is Wang Ximin, a renowned Chinese sculptor and professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts.

The sculpture stands 33 meters tall, with a granite base and bronze elements that serve as intricate decorative accents. At the lower section, silver‑white lightning bolts are sculpted into the form of giant wings, spread wide as if ready to take flight. Above these, four majestic eagles are embedded on all four sides—each eagle symbolizing the enduring spirit of Pingdingshan’s ancient history. During the Shang Dynasty, the region was home to the Ying tribe; by the early Western Zhou period, it had become the fief of Ying Hou, a member of the Zhou royal clan, known as the “Ying State.” The characters “Ying” and “Eagle” share a phonetic similarity and were often used interchangeably in ancient times, underscoring the city’s deep-rooted historical and cultural legacy as the “City of Eagles.” The central portion features four human figures—two men and two women—depicting coal miners, textile workers, steelworkers, and science and technology professionals, each representing the diverse industrial workforce and the people of Pingdingshan. Through their relentless dedication to pioneering ventures, their forward‑looking vision, their open hearts, and their unwavering confidence, they have brought honor and distinction to Pingdingshan, the “Pearl of the Central Plains.” At the top of the sculpture lies a colossal spherical form, encircled by four smaller spheres—symbolizing the planets orbiting the sun in a breathtaking celestial dance that stirs the imagination. Together, the entire sculpture embodies a profound theme: science, democracy, civilization, and progress. The City of Eagles is forging ahead with great vigor and determination, boldly stepping into the future!
