Kanso Twist - Spiral Vase

Inspired by Kanso, the Zen pillar of beauty through simplicity, this vase reduces ornament to a single continuous gesture. Kanso Twist wraps a quiet hourglass body in a fluted skin that spirals from base to rim, turning the absence of decoration into the decoration itself. Printed entirely in vase mode as one seamless part, it carries the calm of a stone column quietly turning in the wind.

Design & Concept

I designed Kanso Twist around the toolpath. With a single perimeter, zero top shell layers, and the slicer's spiralize feature enabled, the printer traces one continuous helix from the bottom of the bed to the top of the vase. The fluting you see is not detail layered onto a surface, it is the surface, born from the way the nozzle moves through space. The hourglass silhouette holds the form's center of gravity, and the spiral pleats fan out in two directions at once, opening at the rim and at the base while pinching at the waist.

Key Features

  • Single-Gesture Design: A continuous spiral fluting sweeps from base to rim, the only ornament the vase needs.
  • Vase Mode Signature: Printed as a single-wall spiralize toolpath, so the print method itself becomes the texture you touch.
  • Hourglass Silhouette: A pinched waist gives the form its center of gravity and lets the pleats fan in two directions at once.
  • Single-Part Print: No supports, no assembly, no extra hardware. The vase comes off the bed ready to display.
  • Zen Resonance: Kanso, the Japanese pillar of simplicity, made physical as a quiet shelf or desk companion.
  • Stone-Effect Friendly: The fluted surface shines under matte and mineral-feel filaments, like the stone-tone print in the photos.

Printing Recommendations

  • Walls / Perimeters: 1. A single perimeter is the defining setting for vase mode.
  • Top Shell Layers: 0. The rim stays open, as a vase rim should.
  • Vase Mode (Spiralize Outer Contour): Enabled. This is the signature setting of the print and must be active to reproduce the continuous
  • spiral toolpath.
  • Spiral Smoothing: Enabled, to soften the Z transitions and keep the fluted surface clean.
  • Infill: 100%. In vase mode this affects only the bottom layers.
  • Supports: Not required.
  • Reinforcement Wall: Disabled.
