Wong Kuk is located in the northern part of the Yau Tsim–Mong Kok District in Hong Kong, situated in central Kowloon, roughly spanning from Nathan Road in the northern reaches of Kowloon to Boundary Street.

Historically known as “Mong Kok,” the area derived its name from the coastal promontory—“Mong Kok Tsui”—to the southwest of Mong Kok Village, which was once abundant in pampas grass. In the late 19th century, Mong Kok Village remained a small hamlet; however, by the early 20th century, the Hong Kong government had begun developing the area. Through extensive land reclamation projects, the district’s footprint expanded, and its population grew steadily. By the 1930s, the official Chinese name had gradually evolved into “Wong Kuk,” reflecting the desire for prosperity and growth, while the English name continued to be “Mong Kok.”
