This is an abacus that combines modern 3D printing technology with traditional abacus culture, and it differs significantly from the conventional Chinese abacus in both structure and function:

 

Structural Features

Number of rods: a total of 13 rods, longer than the typical 11-rod abacus, allowing for calculations involving larger-digit numbers—ideal for complex computations or educational demonstrations.

 

Bead Arrangement:

Upper beads: 2 per rod (the traditional Chinese abacus has only 1 upper bead, representing 5); this design with 2 upper beads is closer to Japanese or Western-style abacuses, where a single upper bead still represents 5, and two can be used for more flexible carry-over operations.

Lower beads: 5 per rod (the traditional Chinese abacus has 4 lower beads, representing 1); the extra lower bead makes rounding and complement operations more intuitive and helps beginners better grasp the “carry over when reaching 5” logic.

Materials and Manufacturing: the entire frame is 3D-printed, and the rod components are standard parts, resulting in a sturdy yet lightweight structure with high customization potential—perfect for DIY enthusiasts or educational settings.

 

Functions and Applications

Abacus instruction: The 13-rod, 7-bead design is better suited for demonstrating the complete carry-over and borrowing logic to students, making the abacus rules of “carry over when reaching 10” and “carry over when reaching 5” easier to understand than with a traditional abacus.

Culture and Collecting: As a 3D-printed cultural and creative product, it is a modernized variant of the traditional abacus, offering both practical utility and collectible value, and can also serve as a handmade gift.

Practical computation: The 13 rods support calculations involving up to 13 digits, meeting the needs of everyday financial and statistical tasks that involve large numbers.
