Dongyang woodcarving is a traditional woodcarving technique named after its origins in Dongyang, Zhejiang. It is regarded as one of China’s Four Great Woodcarving Schools and is celebrated as a “national treasure.” Below is a detailed overview of this exquisite art form:
Historical Evolution
Origins and Early Development: Dongyang woodcarving traces its roots back to the Han Dynasty. By the Tang Dynasty, woodcarving had already been widely employed in architectural decoration—elaborate, three-dimensional round-carved wooden figurines can be found in the tomb of Feng Su during the Zhengyuan era of the Tang Dynasty, as well as in the ancestral tomb of Chancellor Shu Yuanyu dating to 820 AD.
Development and Flourishing: During the Southern Song Dynasty, the popularity of woodblock printing spurred the advancement of woodcarving, at which point Dongyang woodcarving had already reached a high level of craftsmanship. By the Ming Dynasty, Dongyang had become a renowned center for woodcarving, primarily specializing in architectural ornamentation. After Emperor Zhu Di of the Ming Dynasty relocated the capital to Beijing, he summoned Dongyang woodcarvers to the imperial court to create intricately carved palace lanterns. During the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong reigns of the Qing Dynasty, Dongyang woodcarving gained national acclaim, establishing a comprehensive and refined artistic tradition. By the Jiaqing and Daoguang periods, the style of Dongyang woodcarving had evolved toward greater opulence and meticulous detail, giving rise to two major artistic schools: the “Carved Floral Style” and the “Industrial Style.”
