The Chengdu J-20, a fifth-generation stealth air superiority fighter jet developed by China’s Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, entered active service with the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) in September 2017. As a core asset representing China’s breakthrough in independent advanced military aviation technology, it features a twin-engine, single-seat, all-weather design, with key capabilities including stealth (via blended-wing-body layout, internal weapon bays, and radar-absorbent materials), advanced avionics (high-performance AESA radar, EODAS for 360° situational awareness), and a propulsion system evolving from Russian engines to domestic WS-10C (with future WS-15 upgrades). Armed with short-range (PL-10) and long-range (PL-15) air-to-air missiles in internal bays, it primarily undertakes air superiority missions while supporting precision ground/naval strikes and long-range interception. Strategically, it narrows the fighter technology gap with major military powers, enhances the PLAAF’s modern high-intensity combat capabilities, and underpins China’s airspace sovereignty and long-range power projection needs, with continuous upgrades to stealth, range, and network-centric warfare capabilities as of 2024.
