Founded in 1636, Harvard University was originally established by the Massachusetts Bay Colony’s legislative body and initially named “New College.” In March 1639, the university was renamed “Harvard College” in honor of Reverend John Harvard, who had provided generous support to the institution during its formative years. In 1780, Harvard College was officially rechristened “Harvard University.”
