More than plant pot, more than a game, Colour Your World with the Four-in-a-row Plant Pot! Inspired by the classic “Four-in-a-row” game, this cylindrical planter lets you bring colour, fun, and a touch of nostalgia to your home or workspace. Whether you play with it or just enjoy mixing up fun patterns, swapping in different coloured discs to suit your mood or the season, it invites people to interact with an otherwise static object.

The cylindrical shape adds a fun twist to the classic game - since the grid wraps around, you have to consider the wraparound gameplay. Moves can sneak up on you from the back or side, making it more surprising and engaging than a traditional flat version.

The main body of the pot separates from the base, allowing you to release the discs from the bottom without disturbing the plant. Instead of having open holes all the way through, the base keeps the discs securely in place - so you can move the pot around without them falling out.

The pot takes 70 discs, so print 35 of each colour, or more colours if you want to just use it for decorative purposes or make up some new rules for more players.

Print settings

Nothing unusual, I used 0.2mm layers, two perimeters and 10% gyroid infill. I didn’t use supports and the holes printed fine because of the chamfering.

I think the pot would look great in Panchroma Matte PLA, but I didn’t have matte in Polymaker Teal. The discs are matte and I like them.

Since I didn’t have enough matte filament on hand and wanted something with a bit more texture than a standard finish, I used fuzzy skin for the pot. In hindsight, I’d recommend avoiding that, or using a quite fine setting to better preserve the hole detail. If I print another one for a friend, I’ll use matte filament without fuzzy skin, and I’ll add the photos here accordingly.

As I didn't have the matte for the pot and wanting something other than a "normal" finish, I used fuzzy skin on the pot. I'd suggest not doing that or going fine to better preserve the hole detail. If I print another for a friend, I'll use matte filament and no fuzzy skin and I'll update the pictures.

A note on the similar commercial game

The game element here is similar to a well-known commercial game, but the concept of four-in-a-row predates it. I’ve found no patent covering the gameplay mechanic of dropping discs into a vertical grid to make four in a row - and even if one had existed, it would have expired in 1994, as Milton Bradley first released their version in 1974. I also found many clones and derivatives for sale, which reinforces my confidence in the research.
