HexDeck – Modular Hex Mounting System
HexDeck is a modular, friction-fit system built on a hexagonal grid, initially designed for organizing USB drives, SD cards, and more. (Teaser: But why limit it to only drives?)
The baseplates include peg-and-socket combos ranging from 1 to 6 pegs, with mirrored/flipped versions omitted for efficiency. Copy, paste, and mirror to get the right amount of pieces you need for your desired base shape!
For example you could paint it in the slicer or swap filament at the top players to create a grass effect like in my terrain version picture!
You don't even need an ams to create similar styles as my terrain version. Just unleash your creativity!!!
Includes:
- USB-A, USB-C, SD & microSD holders in different orientations
- Blank tiles of various heights for customization
- Modular baseplate
Note on Fit (Serious Part):
I did various test prints to ensure a nice fit. For some, it may be a bit loose, for others a bit tight. Please remember that everyone’s printers have slightly different tolerances, and I tried taking that into account, but there is no way I am going to make it perfect.
Scale ±1–2% if needed.
I am not responsible for damages done to your drives if the fit was too tight. Never use too much force when inserting a drive.
Serious part done.
More module types might be coming soon, but feel free to make your own!
A small insight into my thought process behind this for those interested:
I wanted to make a truly modular storage solution for storage drives (storage for storage, basically), since I couldn't really find anything truly customizable for each individual slot. After V1, which I have to admit did have its flaws, I set out to fix them with this version.
Hexagons for interesting shapes and enough space between drives to prevent them from blocking each other and not look boring.
The baseplate is needed for two main reasons:
- To be able to create gaps between drives to prevent them from blocking each other without wasting too much material.
- To be able to insert them properly since creating a connector with identical ends and easy insertion is a real challenge (the slots would need to go all the way through the model, and for bigger pieces, it wouldn’t look great).
Additionally, after finishing the model, I thought that it could be used for more than just storing drives, but I haven't gotten that far yet.
