Summary
This reusable filament spool is designed for the environmentally friendly ECOrefill filament. The filament is delivered without a spool, held together with zip ties. The idea is that you print your own reusable spool to help conserve the natural resources.
Our 0.8 kg ECOrefill filament is also compatible with RichRap's MasterSpool if you prefer to use that instead. And vice versa, our ECOrefill Spool can be used with MasterSpool compatible filaments as well (read more about that in the section "Can be used with other spool-less filaments" below).
June 10th, 2020: version 2 uploaded. What's new:
Conical pin and corresponding hole
Adapted to fit Flashforge Creator 3 3D printer model
Slightly bigger outer radius
Design improvements on the zip tie holes
Thicker outer flange
How to assemble the reusable spool
Check out this video or read the instructions below.
Instructions
- The spool consists of two identical halves that you put together using zip ties or something similar that you have lying around. 3D print two pieces of the ECOrefill_spool.stl file.
- The 3D printable spool is designed to be used together with the cardboard box that the ECOrefill filament is delivered in. Simply cut the box along the dashed lines, to create the spool's sides.
FYI: This spool can also be purchased in our online store, if you don't want to 3D print it yourself.
Environmentally friendly
3D printing with the usual filaments that are delivered on plastic spools is not so friendly to our environment. The plastic spool is used once, and then thrown in the trash. The plastic spools also weighs a little bit (usually around 200–300 grams), which means extra and definitely unnecessary shipping weights. Our reusable spool weighs approx. 100 gram (depending on print settings).
By using our ECOrefill filaments, delivered without plastic spools, you can help us to conserve the natural resources. By not producing spools for each filament roll we sell, we are also able to reduce the price of the filament and the shipping, meaning you get more for your money!
Our spool can be printed using a 3D printer with a build plate as small as 11 x 11 cm (for example FlashForge Finder).
Get the ECOrefill filament in our online store.
Can be used with other spool-less filaments
This spool can of course also be used with other filaments delivered without plastic spools. As it is designed to be used together with the cardboard box that the filament is delivered in, we've included a template for cutting the cardboard box. The template can be downloaded from the Thing Files.
