IKEA SKADIS – Holder for a 1 kg solder wire spool (ultra-stable)

 

1 kg of solder wire—yes, it really exists. More like a dumbbell with wire than a “small spool” 😄


To prevent the whole setup from becoming a weak point on the SKÅDIS board, I designed this sturdy spool holder: it reliably supports the weight, and the spool can be unwound easily and cleanly.

 

Dimensions of my 1 kg spool (fits perfectly):

  • Outer diameter: 70 mm

  • Hole diameter (core): 30 mm

  • Spool width: 73 mm

Other holders have already given up on me before they even got onto the board—usually once the spool was in place. This one stays steady: three hooks evenly distribute the load, and made from PETG, it holds securely on both the printed version and the original SKÅDIS plate.

 

Construction / Files

The model consists of two parts (two printed plates):

  1. Holder with three SKÅDIS hooks

  2. Roller/axle for the solder wire spool

The roller has a 24.4 mm diameter—so it not only fits my 1 kg spool but often accommodates smaller spools, multiple solder wire rolls, or similar winding spools as well.

 

Material

  • PETG recommended (my favorite choice for “bearing weight while staying intact”)

  • PLA may work too, depending on the spool’s weight and ambient temperature—but PETG is simply the stress-free option here.

Print Settings

Holder

  • 0.2 mm layer height

  • 4 walls

  • 25% infill: Gyroid

  • Support for the hooks: Tree (Auto) / Tree Hybrid, only on the print bed, only in critical areas

Gyroid works great here because it distributes forces evenly in all directions (like a 3D spring structure). With four walls, primary stability comes from the outer perimeter, while the infill further reinforces against warping. The result? Less give, more rock-solid stability.

 

 

Roller

  • 0.2 mm layer height

  • 3 walls

  • 15% infill: Gyroid

  • If adhesion issues arise, please enable Brim/Edge
