The Devil Statue in Lübeck, Germany: Located near St. Mary’s Church in Lübeck, Germany, this statue was erected to commemorate a local legend. According to the tale, a devil was tricked by workers into believing he was helping to build a brewery; only after the structure was completed did he realize he had been deceived. Enraged, he threatened to destroy the church, but was appeased when the workers promised to build the brewery instead. In 1999, a bronze statue of the devil, designed by Rolf Gehrke, was placed at the spot where the legendary devil is said to have set down his stone slab. The statue depicts the devil seated with a smile, giving it a rather endearing appearance.
