Design Concept

Drawing inspiration from the classic portable mechanical equatorial sundial, this piece reinterprets and refines its structure. By evoking ancient timekeeping instruments that relied on sunlight, it transforms the natural passage of time into a tangible experience. Using 3D printing as its medium, it infuses everyday life with a soothing, contemplative atmosphere, bringing a sense of calm and personal ritual to home meditation spaces. The sundial relies on sunlight for accurate timekeeping, tracking the sun’s movement throughout the day, encouraging users to slow down their hectic pace, focus inward through the observation of shifting shadows, and cultivate emotional clarity—aligning perfectly with the mindfulness‑and‑healing ethos championed by the event.

 

Thematic Breakdown

  1. Creating an Atmospheric Ambience: Featuring antique brass‑like surface textures and vintage‑inspired engraved scales, this piece can serve as a central decorative element in meditation nooks or ceremonial corners. When bathed in sunlight, its components cast dynamic, shifting shadows, enhancing a relaxed, serene ambiance—ideal for home meditation or solitary reflection.

  2. Inner Emotional Healing: Unlike electronic devices with glaring screens and incessant digital alerts, this sundial measures time solely through natural sunlight, helping to alleviate the anxiety often triggered by modern life’s relentless pace. Manually calibrating the latitude and aligning the sun’s path to read the time offers a slow, focused, immersive experience, gently calming the mind and nurturing inner stability during the meticulous process of fine-tuning.

  3. Symbolism and Narrative Expression: The object incorporates astronomical symbols such as the ecliptic–equator angle and monthly declination markings, while its fan‑shaped scale fully maps the sun’s annual trajectory. Drawing on classical celestial imagery associated with stars and sunlight, it conveys personal reflections on temporal rhythms and life’s cadence. Intricate openwork carvings and traditional sighting apertures further enhance its retro aesthetic, transforming intangible feelings about time into a tangible, interactive decorative piece.

3D Printing Implementation and Optimization

  1. Modular Design: Based on the mechanical structure and 3D printing constraints, the model was logically disassembled, with parts joined using printed screws (adhesive is required in certain areas).

  2. Material and Parameter Selection: We recommend the robust PETG filament, which, when finished with a heat‑smoothing technique, yields a polished, rounded top surface that eliminates layer lines, recreating the warm, smooth texture of antique brass.

  3. Expanded Practical Applications: Beyond static display, the finished piece allows manual adjustment of the latitude slider to match local geographic coordinates, transcending its role as a mere decorative item. Placed on a desk or in a meditation corner, it serves both as an atmospheric accent and as a traditional time‑telling device—a dedicated tool for daily mindfulness, letting users pause, observe the interplay of light and shadow, and find inner stillness.

Conclusion

This reimagined sundial moves beyond the conventional decorative function of ordinary ornaments, seamlessly blending the timekeeping logic and light‑shadow interaction inherent in classical astronomical instruments with the needs of contemporary mindful living at home. Leveraging 3D printing to lower the barrier to crafting intricate, vintage‑style mechanisms, it brings these timeless timekeepers into everyday domestic spaces, using sunlight, shadow, and the changing rhythm of the seasons to add a unique, meditative ritual to even the most ordinary days.
