The favorite game of my childhood wasn’t Ludo, checkers, Chinese chess, Gomoku, or even chess—it was Animal Chess. The simplest version used paper tokens as pieces. Yet for me back then, it was the most beloved game among my friends.

 

Now, let’s create a set of chess pieces I truly love, combining them with the animated movie “Toy Story,” which my kids and I adore—resulting in a Toy Story–themed Animal Chess set!

 

 

Animal Chess is a traditional Chinese board game. Each player controls eight types of pieces—elephant, lion, tiger, leopard, wolf, dog, cat, and mouse—and they face off on a 9×7 grid.

The board features rivers and traps, following the rule that larger pieces capture smaller ones. However, mice can eat elephants, same‑type pieces may devour each other, lions and tigers can cross rivers, and when a mouse is in the river, land animals cannot attack it.

The winner is determined by either capturing the opponent’s animal den or eliminating all of their pieces.

 

The display cases on the board correspond to the rivers in Animal Chess:

Since toys dread being locked away in cabinets, I designed louvered cabinet doors to represent these rivers.

 

 

The traps are white, housing formidable villainous characters:

Bunny Team vs. Andy Team

Strawberry Bear vs. King Zack

Big Baby vs. Benson

Rabbit Brother vs. Duckling

 

 

The animal dens (homes) on both sides correspond to Andy and Bonnie from Toy Story.

When the toys return to their owners, it means they’ve come home.

 

The strength values of the characters can be freely adjusted according to each side’s preferences. Below is my chosen ranking of character strengths in Animal Chess:

Elephant: Woody–Buzz

Lion: Jessie–Shepherdess

Tiger: Mrs. Egghead–Mr. Egghead

Leopard: Spring Dog–Red Heart Pony

Wolf: Tracy–Huggy Dragon (Tyrannosaurus)

Dog: Three-Eyed Kid–Ham (Piggy Bank)

Cat: Tablet–Hippo Navigator

Mouse: Forky–Karen (Forky’s Wife)

 

 

Mr. and Mrs. Egghead can pass through the cabinet doors because their limbs and organs are detachable, making it very easy to slide them out.

 

The skills of each character can be discussed and customized together, based on your and your opponent’s preferences, allowing you to enjoy playing together.

 

Separating Woody from the Shepherdess, and Jessie from Buzz, ensures that the Shepherdess and Jessie can effectively counterbalance Woody and Buzz—hahaha!

 

 

Why is Forky a mouse?

Because Forky constantly chases Woody into the trash bin, indefinitely stalling him.

Originally, we planned to assign Jessie as Forky’s opposing character since she could keep Buzz under control. But to match up the pairings, we ended up designing Forky as a mouse instead.
