This is a contemporary 3D-printed art pendant inspired by ancient jade artifacts from the Western Han Dynasty, seamlessly blending the majestic grandeur of the treasured masterpieces from the Tomb of the Nanyue King with the elegant, refined spirit of the Han-period jade cicada. By reinterpreting two thousand years of Eastern aesthetics through modern digital manufacturing techniques, it serves both as an everyday wearable accessory and as a tactile, miniature replica of an archaeological artifact.

I. Design Origins: The Timeless Beauty of Protection Across Two Millennia

The core prototype for this piece is derived from the Western Han green-jade door-knocker housed in the Museum of the Nanyue King in Guangzhou—a national treasure unearthed from the head chest of the coffin in the tomb of King Zhao Mo of the Nanyue Kingdom. This exquisitely crafted ritual object was used by the Han imperial court to guard the entrance, ward off evil, and invite good fortune, representing the highest level of ceremonial regalia in the Han period. The original work is carved from a single block of green jade, featuring a dignified animal face and gracefully flowing cloud motifs, epitomizing the pinnacle of the Han dynasty’s jade-carving style characterized by “majestic grandeur and lively elegance.”

While retaining the classic “animal-face-with-ring” form of the door-knocker, the designer innovatively replaces the original animal nose with the image of the Han-period jade cicada, which was regarded in the Han era as a symbol of “pure integrity, immortality, and endless vitality.”

At the same time, the symmetrical decorative patterns on either side of the piece incorporate the essence of Han-period phoenix-and-bird motifs and cloud-scroll patterns, with fluid, graceful lines that preserve the antique weightiness of Han-era ornamentation while infusing it with a touch of dynamic lightness and ethereal grace.
