The Pope (Latin: Papa), literally meaning “father,” first appeared within the early Catholic Church as a term of endearment used by Christians to refer to their spiritual leaders—though it did not inherently carry any specific official authority. The head of the Catholic Church—officially known as “The One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church”—includes both the Roman Catholic Church (Latin Rite) and the Eastern Catholic Churches.
