Manta rays, also called devil fish, are large cartilaginous fish living in tropical shallow seas. They have flat, wide bodies and pectoral fins like giant wings, swimming gracefully underwater. Two cephalic fins on their heads gather plankton into their mouths. They feed on tiny fish and plankton. Gentle and harmless to humans, they sometimes leap out of the ocean. Mantas grow slowly and reproduce rarely. Due to overfishing, their numbers drop sharply, so they are protected marine species.
