Car Design — Retro Typewriter‑Style License Plate

Hi everyone! Today I’d like to share with you a little nostalgic project I recently designed and printed: the “Retro Typewriter‑Style License Plate”. That’s right—this adorable red piece sits behind your windshield! The moment inspiration struck, I thought: why not bring a touch of vintage mechanical charm to even something as utilitarian as a license plate?

Every time I see the intricate gears and levers of an old‑style typewriter, I can’t help but be captivated. So I decided to bring this “retro mechanical aesthetic” into the car! This decorative piece isn’t just a license plate—it’s also an interactive little desk toy:

  • Rotating side gears: With a gentle nudge, they click and turn, offering a satisfying tactile experience that helps relieve stress while waiting at traffic lights (but please keep your eyes on the road when driving!).
  • Magnetic digital modules: Each digit is a separate small block with a magnet embedded on its back. You can freely rearrange them like puzzle pieces to create license plates, special dates, or even secret messages! Today you might spell out “135‑683‑3121,” tomorrow switch it to your girlfriend’s birthday—whatever suits your mood.
  • Low‑profile, compact design: Measuring just 13 cm wide by 3 cm tall, it fits neatly on your center console or in the corner of your windshield without obstructing your view. Its vibrant red accent adds a lively touch to your interior.

As for materials, since the plate uses a magnetic attachment system, you’ll need a total of22 magnets measuring 5 mm in diameter and 2.5 mm thick. Of course, if you have magnets of different sizes, feel free to download the file and adjust the part dimensions accordingly!

After placing it in my car, it unexpectedly became quite the conversation starter! Friends who hop in can’t resist fiddling with the gears: “Wait, did you really print this yourself?” And during brief stops, reconfiguring the digital modules into “Please Wait 5 Minutes” is incredibly handy—sometimes even turning into a playful way to signal a friendly gesture (though no guarantees 😅).

Time for some interaction!

→ What special numbers would you like to display on this license plate? A birthday, an anniversary, or maybe a quirky coded message?

→ In the next installment, I’ll share more cool projects I’ve customized using 3D printing!
