Creation Notes
Sand is the sea, stones are islands, moss is the passage of time, and fences mark boundaries. With the fewest possible elements, we embrace the broadest realms of imagination.
This piece takes the kare-sansui garden as its prototype, recreating a minimalist, serene Zen space at a scale of 1/64. The entire scene eschews any superfluous vegetation or ornamentation, relying instead on just five elemental components—white sand, rocks, moss, fences, and stone lanterns—to construct a fully realized narrative world.
The fine sand surface is delicately raked into concentric ripple patterns, evoking the waves that spread outward when a pebble strikes still water, freezing that fleeting moment of motion—using stillness to convey movement, and silence to express sound. The sharp edges of the rocks contrast with the soft texture of the sand ripples, while the vibrant green of the moss harmonizes with the austere, weathered quality of the sand and stones, together forming a miniature universe brimming with tension within restraint.
Design Philosophy
“Less is more” serves as the core design principle for this scene. At the extremely small scale of 1/64, every grain of sand, the orientation of each rock, and the placement of every clump of moss have been meticulously refined. The design rejects decorative excess; instead, each element plays its own distinct role—

White Sand Raking Patterns: Represent flow and time, serving as the “breath” of the entire scene.
Upright Rocks: Symbolize permanence, engaging in an eternal dialogue with the fluidity of the sand ripples.
Moss Clumps: Illustrate the tenacious vitality of life thriving even in constrained environments.
Low Fences: Define spatial boundaries, hinting at the philosophical questions of “inside versus outside” and “finite versus infinite.”
Stone Lanterns: Act as visual anchors for the scene, symbolizing the inner light that burns quietly in the darkness.
Color Scheme Explanation
| Color | Symbolic Meaning |
|---|---|
| White | Purity, emptiness, and non-attachment |
| Ink Black | Stability, constancy, and rootedness |
| Green | Life, time, and growth |
| Brown | Nature, warmth, and a handcrafted feel |
The color palette is rigorously restrained, with no superfluous hues introduced, so that the moderation of color echoes the spiritual core of the scene.
Scene Highlights
The arrangement of the rocks follows the principles of asymmetrical aesthetics, with an odd number of stones placed to avoid visually rigid symmetry.
The texture of the moss is achieved through multi-layered particle stacking, faithfully replicating the fluffy, three-dimensional quality of real moss.
The stone lanterns are precisely scaled down to 1/64, with meticulous attention to detail in reproducing the three-part structure of the lamp opening, base, and top cover.
The low fences mimic the texture of hand-woven braiding, complementing the terracotta color scheme.
