The Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro was erected to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Brazil’s independence in 1922. After an extensive design and construction process, it was completed on October 12, 1931. Standing 30 meters tall and weighing a total of 1,145 tons, the statue has outstretched arms spanning 28 meters from tip to tip. It perches atop Corcovado Mountain—also known as “Hunchback Mountain” or “Jesus Mountain”—at an elevation of over 700 meters, overlooking the entire city.
