Pen Holder

This project started from a very simple idea—to make everyday stationery storage a bit more fun. I’m particularly fond of space and aerospace themes, so I decided to design a pen holder in the shape of a rocket. But I didn’t want it to be just an ordinary rocket; I wanted it to be both functional and full of personality. To achieve that, I paid close attention to every detail, from the overall structure to the color scheme.
First, the main body of the pen holder is designed to resemble a rocket’s “cabin,” with a smooth, rounded spherical form that gives it a charming yet sturdy appearance. The circular recess on the front mimics a rocket window, adding visual depth and interest. At the base, four small feet ensure stable placement on the desk, while a tiny “thruster” protrusion on the side further enhances the overall design, lending it a touch of humor.
What I’m most proud of is the red conical cap at the top—it was originally printed as a separate part and, when placed beside the pen holder, looked like a “nose cone” waiting to be attached. In the final product, it fits perfectly into place, serving as the pièce de résistance. The red-and-white color scheme also echoes the classic image of a rocket, making the entire piece instantly recognizable.
In terms of functionality, the opening at the top is generously sized, easily accommodating markers, pencils, and even rulers. I deliberately kept the interior space unobstructed to prevent pens from getting stuck and ensure easy access. At the same time, the model avoids overly complex overhanging structures, making it highly suitable for 3D printing and easy for beginners to replicate.
From design and printing to assembly, this process has made me rethink the balance between practicality and playfulness. This isn’t just a pen holder; it’s more like a little astronaut on my desk, quietly accompanying me through each day of work. When I see photos of it “in frame” with my pens—and that standalone red nose cone—I feel an immense sense of accomplishment: it’s the mark of creation, and a small but meaningful joy in everyday life.
