I wanted to bring a cybernetic samurai to life, and here’s the result – Cyber Oni-Samurai 13, a custom figurine built on the Dummy 13 platform (resized to 150% to capture detail in the face and armor).

This design is split into 4 plates, each with different material and print recommendations. I’ve included all my notes and lessons learned to help you get the cleanest result possible.

🧩 Plates & Printing Recommendations

Plate 1 – Frame

  • Best printed with PETG (recommended for joints).
  • PETG provides strength and flexibility.
  • If available, ABS/ASA will give you the strongest results.
  • PLA can be used, but expect stiffer assembly, possible breakage under stress, and joints that loosen over time due to creep.

(Guidance adapted from @soozafone’s original Dummy 13 v1.0 post.)

Plate 2 – Head Armor

  • Printed with PLA (multi-color AMS setup).
  • I painted the head, but it’s easier to just load your AMS with the filament colors you prefer.
  • Recommended settings:
    • Layer Height: 0.12 mm
    • Supports: Tree Supports Slim
  • ⚠️ Be extra careful removing supports around the hair. If your printer is calibrated, you’ll get a clean result.
  • I recommend performing full calibration and maintenance before printing the head.

Plate 3 – Armor

  • Printed in PLA.
  • Designed for multi-color printing – most parts are separated for easy AMS swaps.
  • The chest piece is not separated (too far along in the design to redo).
  • Supports: Turn on Tree Supports Slim.
  • Be careful when removing tree supports, you can break the parts.

Plate 4 – Sword & Sheath

  • Printed in PLA.
  • Simple design to complement the figurine.

🎨 Filament Notes

  • Armor parts: PLA, PETG, and ASA all tested successfully.
  • Frame parts: PETG works, but ABS/ASA gives the best results.
  • Why not PLA for the frame?
    • Stiff → high assembly force.
    • Brittle → prone to snapping.
    • Creeps under stress → joints loosen with time.

⚔️ Final Notes

  • The Dummy 13 platform was scaled up to 150% for improved facial and armor detail.
  • The design uses 4 plates total for easy management.
  • Feel free to remix the color scheme – that’s part of the fun!
